Therein lies the problem with most churches. Churches perceive they are a friendly church because the members are friendly to one another. But they don't think about walking in the shoes of first-time guests. They don't look at their facilities, their parking, their website, or their friendliness from a guest perspective.

With a country club membership you pay others to do the work for you. With church membership, everyone has a role or function. That is why some are hands, feet, ears, or eyes. We are all different, but we are necessary parts of the whole.

Even in incredible churches, very few members make the effort to greet and speak to someone already seated before the service begins. And, frankly, most church members don't ever go sit with guests. Good church signage is a statement of your church's hospitality. It means you are expecting guests; and it means you desire for guests to come to your church.

So if you really expect to see younger families visit your church, you absolutely must demonstrate that your church is safe, secure, and sanitary. In fact, I just spoke with a Millennial who told me she was not taking her kids back to a particular church because the toys were so unsanitary. "It was a literal breeding ground for germs and diseases," she told me. "I will never return there.

Vision is critical to lead change. Vision statements are likewise important in the process. But leaders who shape a vision without a foundation of hope are not doing the church any favors. Such is the reason I shared the hope factor first.

The essence of this facet of change leadership is simple and clear: become a voice of hope and provide a clear vision for the church to move forward in a strategic fashion. Change leaders who provide hope and vision are the most successful change leaders.

Do not enter into change leadership lightly. Do not begin the process without concerted prayer. And realize that change is all about people. If you don't deal with people issues in leading change, you will fail. It's just that simple.

Healthy church membership means you find your joy in being last, instead of seeking your way and being first.

If you love change more than you love people, you have already failed as a leader.

Yes, we respect the past. At times we revere the past. But we can't live in the past.
