And I found myself wanting even better stories. And that's the thing you'll realize when you organize your life into the structure of story.

The point of a story is the character arc, the change.

The only two motivations a hero has in a story are to escape something bad or experience something good.

The strongest character in a story isn't the hero, it's the guide. Yoda. Haymitch. It's the guide who gets the hero back on track. The guide gives the hero a plan and enough confidence to enter the fight. The guide has walked the path of the hero and has the advice and wisdom to get the hero through their troubles so they can beat the resistance.

place. I wondered whether a person could plan a story for his life and live it intentionally.

You don't realize your story is changing you until you look back.

When we're waiting for a story get started, we're really waiting for a problem the hero has to overcome. We're waiting for something tough or difficult or scary or painful to happen.

And once you live a good story, you get a taste for a kind of meaning in life, and you can't go back to being normal; you can't go back to meaningless scenes stitched together by the forgettable thread of wasted time. The more practice stories I lived, the more I wanted an epic to climb inside of and see through till its end.

Oh, this is another hero, like me. I wish I had more time to hear their story, but right now I'm busy looking for a guide.

I wonder if what might help couples build great families is to pick a place for their family to go and then hit the gas, to work toward their vision and build it out. Relationships have a way of stabilizing when in motion. Until then, they just feel like a road trip to nowhere.

In a story, audiences must always know who the hero is, what the hero wants, who the hero has to defeat to get what they want, what tragic thing will happen if the hero doesn't win, and what wonderful thing will happen if they do.
