So the men took these gifts, along with double the amount of silver, and Benjamin as well. Then they hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

When Joseph saw Benjamin with his brothers, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for they shall dine with me at noon.”

The man did as Joseph had commanded and took the brothers to Josephís house.

But the brothers were frightened that they had been taken to Josephís house. “We have been brought here because of the silver that was returned in our bags the first time,” they said. “They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our donkeys.”

So they approached Josephís steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.

“Please, sir,” they said, “we really did come down here the first time to buy food.

But when we came to the place we lodged for the night, we opened our sacks and, behold, each of us found his silver in the mouth of his sack! It was the full amount of our silver, and we have brought it back with us.

We have brought additional silver with us to buy food. We do not know who put our silver in our sacks.”

“It is fine,” said the steward. “Do not be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, gave you the treasure that was in your sacks. I received your silver.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.

Then Joseph instructed his steward: “Fill the menís sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each oneís silver in the mouth of his sack.

“Why does my lord say these things?” they asked. “Your servants could not possibly do such a thing.

We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. Why would we steal silver or gold from your masterís house?

So each one quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.

My lord asked his servants, ëDo you have a father or a brother?í

Then you told your servants, ëBring him down to me so that I can see him for myself.í

But you said to your servants, ëUnless your younger brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.í

Now when we returned to your servant my father, we relayed your words to him.

Then our father said, ëGo back and buy us some food.í

But we answered, ëWe cannot go down there unless our younger brother goes with us. So if our younger brother is not with us, we cannot see the man.í

So if the boy is not with us when I return to your servant, and if my father, whose life is wrapped up in the boyís life,

Indeed, your servant guaranteed the boyís safety to my father, saying, ëIf I do not return him to you, I will bear the guilt before you, my father, all my life.í

But pay no regard to your belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.í”

So the sons of Israel did as they were told. Joseph gave them wagons as Pharaoh had instructed, and he also gave them provisions for their journey.
