This is what the LORD says: By this you will know that I am the LORD. Behold, with the staff in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will turn to blood.

The fish in the Nile will die, the river will stink, and the Egyptians will be unable to drink its water.í”

And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ëTake your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over their rivers and canals and ponds and reservoirs—that they may become blood.í There will be blood throughout the land of Egypt, even in the vessels of wood and stone.”

Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded; in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials, Aaron raised the staff and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was turned to blood.

The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. And there was blood throughout the land of Egypt.

Instead, Pharaoh turned around, went into his palace, and did not take any of this to heart.

And seven full days passed after the LORD had struck the Nile.

But if you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with frogs.

The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.í”

So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.

And the LORD did as Moses requested, and the frogs in the houses, the courtyards, and the fields died.

They were piled into countless heaps, and there was a terrible stench in the land.

When Pharaoh saw that there was relief, however, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said.

“This is the finger of God,” the magicians said to Pharaoh. But Pharaohís heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

But if you will not let My people go, I will send swarms of flies upon you and your officials and your people and your houses. The houses of the Egyptians and even the ground where they stand will be full of flies.

I will make a distinction between My people and your people. This sign will take place tomorrow.í”

And the LORD did so. Thick swarms of flies poured into Pharaohís palace and into the houses of his officials. Throughout Egypt the land was ruined by swarms of flies.

But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time as well, and he would not let the people go.

then the hand of the LORD will bring a severe plague on your livestock in the field—on your horses, donkeys, camels, herds, and flocks.

But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that no animal belonging to the Israelites will die.í”

The LORD set a time, saying, “Tomorrow the LORD will do this in the land.”

And the next day the LORD did just that. All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one animal belonging to the Israelites died.

Pharaoh sent officials and found that none of the livestock of the Israelites had died. But Pharaohís heart was hardened, and he would not let the people go.

Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from the furnace; in the sight of Pharaoh, Moses is to toss it into the air.
