Never mistake mere activity for accomplishment

A person who values winning above anything will do anything to win. And such people are threats to their organizations.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail . . . Never mistake activity for achievement . .

There is also the professional mentor, a person whose success in his or her career can be a source of practical wisdom and inspiration. This success might be mea sured in material gain or far-reaching influence, or in lives touched and relationships fostered. These mentors can offer a model for good business, ethical practices, and effective work habits, and they often provide the motivation we need to seize whatever opportunities come our way.

Drawing up plans such as these diagrams is the easy part. I did it thousands of times. Creating a successful organization with people who execute the plans at a level of Competitive Greatness—now, that's the challenge of leadership.

Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty (Proverbs 21:5).

Even at 94, I want to be the best I can be, and hard work is the only way to make this happen.

Long-Term Success Requires Short-Term Focus.

A Successful Journey Is the Destination

Mix idealism with realism and add hard work. This will often bring much more than you could ever hope for.

I told players at UCLA that we, as a team, are like a powerful car. Maybe a Bill Walton or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Michael Jordan is the big engine, but if one wheel is flat, we're going no place. And if we have brand new tires but the lug nuts are missing, the wheels come off. What good is the powerful engine now? It's no good at all.

I'm very proud of the fact that while all the records were being set at UCLA by our basketball teams, I felt exactly the same way. Family is first. Always. Always.

It is most difficult in my mind, to seperate success, whether it be in your profession, your family, or as in my case, in basketball, from religion.

Getting your people to think "Team First" is vital. It starts when you teach each member of the group how she or he contributes to the organization, when you make each one feel connected to the team's efforts, productivity, and ultimate success.

Achievement will continue at the same or a greater level only if you do not permit the infection of success to take hold of you and your organization. The symptom of that infection is called complacency. Contentment with past accomplishments or acceptance of the status quo can derail an organization quickly. In sports or business, getting to the top is difficult. One of the reasons staying there is so rare is because the infection sets in.

Try your hardest in all ways and you are a success.

Ultimately, I believe that's what leadership is all about: helping others to achieve their own greatness by helping the organization to succeed.

You never fail if you know in your heart that you did the best of which you are capable. I did my best. That is all I could do.
