Quotes About Motion
Had Newton served on more faculty committees at Cambridge, his first law of motion might have read: A decisionmaking body at rest or in motion tends to stay at rest or in motion in the same direction unless acted upon by an outside force.
~ Alan S. Blinder

Matter is lazy. It resists change. It wants to keep on doing whatever it's doing, whether that's sitting still or moving. We call that laziness inertia, but that doesn't mean we understand it. For a thousand years we've labelled it, quantified it, caged it in equations, but we've still only scratched the surface of what it really is.
~ Alastair Reynolds

if, relative to K, K' is a uniformly moving co-ordinate system devoid of rotation, then natural phenomena run their course with respect to K' according to exactly the same general laws as with respect to K. This statement is called the Principle of Relativity (in the restricted sense).
~ Albert Einstein

The action of the earth on the stone takes place indirectly. The earth produces in its surroundings a gravitational field, which acts on the stone and produces its motion of fall...The intensity and direction of the field at points farther removed...are thence determined by the law which governs the properties in space of the gravitational fields themselves.
~ Albert Einstein

The ability to portray people in still life and in motion requires the highest measure of intuition and talent.
~ Albert Einstein

He might also interpret his experience thus: "My body of reference (the carriage) remains permanently at rest. With reference to it, however, there exists (during the period of application of the brakes) a gravitational field which is directed forwards and which is variable with respect to time. Under the influence of this field, the embankment together with the earth move non-uniformly in such a manner that their original velocity in the backward direction is continuously reduced.
~ Albert Einstein

Pully, hauly, tug with a will; the gods wiggle waggle, but the sky stands still.

It was not really like a person moving, thought Mma Ramotswe; it was more a geological movement

Every soul is immortal—for whatever is in perpetual motion is immortal. Every man's soul has by the law of his birth been a spectator of eternal truth, or it would never have passed into this our mortal frame, yet still it is no easy matter for all to be reminded of their past by their present existence." —Plato

I did things I did not understand for reasons I could not begin to explain just to be in motion, to be trying to do something, change something in a world I wanted desperately to make over but could not imagine for myself.

There is magic in motion. There is energy in change. There is something in all of us to make a difference in anyway, everyday.

All objects moved through space-time at the exact same rate.
~ Douglas E. Richards

The total kinetic energy an object picks up by being in motion is half of its mass times its velocity squared. So a tenfold increase in an object's velocity increases the energy it carries a hundredfold.

When you're moving at the speed of light through space, you stop moving through time. It stops completely. It turns out that your speed through space, combined with your speed through time, always adds up to the speed of light.
~ Douglas E. Richards

It turns out that while objects can move through space and time at different rates, they all move through space-time at exactly the same rate: the speed of light. Always.

Michael Berry wrote a paper called Regular and Irregular Motion. He determined the predictability of the path of a struck billiards ball. The path after the first impact is easy to determine with basic geometry. The second path is a bit harder, but still relatively easy. By the 9th impact Berry determined that the gravitational pull of a person standing next to the table had enough of an influence on the ball path that it was necessary to be included in the calculations.
